January is 4th grade's second fundraising month. All month, we will be selling hot chocolate after school in the snack shack. If you are interesting in helping run the booth (we need volunteers to set up since we don't have a late prep), please e-mail us as soon as possible and we can wok out a schedule.
In addition to the snack shack, this Friday, January 9th is our second movie night. We will be showing "How to Train Your Dragon 2" from 6:00 - 8:00. Admission is free and students are encouraged to bring blankets and pillows to make themselves comfortable while they watch the movie. Pizza, drinks, and snacks will be sold during the movie; all proceeds will go towards bringing down the costs of the 4th grade field trips (Hoover Dam, the Southern Nevada overnight, and Carson City).
We are currently in need of movie night donations: soda (caffeine free if possible), water, paper plates/napkins, snacks (fruit snacks, chips, individual cookie/cracker bags, etc.), specialty items (cotton candy, ice cream treats, large pixie sticks, glow necklaces, etc), or cash donations to go towards pizza. Please send in any donations with your student as soon as possible. If you would like to volunteer, please let us know. Flyers will be sent home with students tomorrow. Thank you for your support.
CLASSROOM NEWS
In math, students have completed the addition and subtraction standard algorithm unit (quizzes were passed back today - retests will be available on Friday) and have started working on forming an understanding of multiplication. Students will not learn the standard multiplication algorithm until 5th grade - please encourage your student to practice multiplication using the strategies being sent home to avoid any confusion. If you have any questions about the methods, please let me know.
In reading, students are studying the elements of drama while also focusing on text structures (such as comparing and contrasting). In writing, students began working on as essay contest; they will work on an essay regarding Brazil - please ask your child for more details.
